Aftercare: Excessive Sweating Treatment

This document is for existing patients of The Glow Co. Aesthetics. It has been prepared by Registered Nurse Lisa to support your recovery following treatment received at our clinic. It is not intended for general publication and does not constitute advertising or promotion of any prescription medicine. All prescription medicines are prescribed by our clinic's medical practitioner following individual clinical assessment.

Your Treatment

Today you received injections of botulinum toxin into the skin of the treated area. Botulinum toxin is a Schedule 4 prescription medicine that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands, significantly reducing sweat production in the treated area.

Results develop gradually over the 2 weeks following your appointment. Full effect is typically established at 2 to 4 weeks and lasts approximately 4 to 6 months, though duration varies between patients.

What to Expect

  • Small raised bumps at injection points, settling within 20 to 30 minutes
  • Mild redness or tenderness at the treated site for 24 to 48 hours
  • Bruising at injection sites, possible in some patients, resolving within 7 to 14 days
  • Compensatory sweating in adjacent untreated areas is possible in some patients. This is a known response and typically reduces over time

Aftercare Instructions

For the First 4 Hours

  • Remain upright. Do not lie down
  • Do not touch, rub, or apply pressure to the treated area
  • Do not apply deodorant, antiperspirant, or any topical product to the treated site
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, or anything generating significant heat or sweating
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications including ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen unless medically necessary. Paracetamol is fine

For the First 24 Hours

  • Avoid shaving or waxing the treated area
  • Avoid applying deodorant or antiperspirant to the treated site
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause significant sweating
  • Continue to avoid anti-inflammatory medications and alcohol
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the treated area

For the First 3 Days

  • Avoid high-intensity exercise or anything generating excessive heat
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and spa treatments
  • After 3 days the botulinum toxin will have settled and will not migrate from the treated site

For the First 7 Days

  • Avoid laser hair removal, waxing, or any invasive skin treatment to the treated area

When You Will See Results

  • Days 5 to 10: Reduction in sweating begins to become noticeable
  • Weeks 2 to 4: Full effect established
  • Duration: 4 to 6 months on average. Patients who have had multiple treatments often find duration extends over time

Possible Complications

  • Incomplete response: If after 4 weeks you find sweating has not reduced sufficiently, contact the clinic. A targeted top-up may be clinically appropriate
  • Swelling: If swelling occurs at an injection site, an oral antihistamine is appropriate. Please also contact the clinic
  • Infection: Rare. Signs include increasing redness, heat, and swelling appearing 5 to 7 days post-treatment. Contact the clinic immediately if you notice these

Contact the Clinic Immediately If You Experience

  • Significant swelling, heat, or spreading redness beyond the injection sites
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Any symptom that concerns you

For urgent concerns, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department.

For non-urgent concerns, contact Nurse Lisa on 0405 130 108.

For further information, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency has published a patient resource: Supporting a safe choice about cosmetic injectables.

Your Review Appointment

Your review is scheduled at approximately 4 weeks post-treatment once the full effect is established. Nurse Lisa will assess your response and confirm whether the treatment area is fully covered or whether a targeted top-up would be beneficial.

Contact the clinic or call 0405 130 108 with any questions.
