Jaw Clenching, Headaches & Masseter

Jaw tension, teeth grinding and persistent headaches are often connected to overactivity in the masseter muscles. Registered Nurse Lisa consults on these concerns at The Glow Co. Aesthetics in Gordon Park, Brisbane.

You must be 18 years or older to book an aesthetics consultation at The Glow Co. Aesthetics.

Understanding Your Concern

Jaw tension and what drives it

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding place sustained load on the masseter muscles at the sides of the jaw. Over time this produces morning stiffness, headaches near the temples, tooth sensitivity, and in some cases a visibly broader jaw appearance from muscle bulk. These symptoms are often connected to habitual muscle overactivity. Nurse Lisa consults on these concerns and can discuss what options are relevant to your situation.

The Contributing Factors

Why does this happen?

  • 01

Stress and anxiety. Sustained psychological stress is the most common driver of jaw clenching, often intensifying during periods of pressure at work or home.

  • 02

Sleep-related grinding. Many people grind during sleep without awareness, only noticing symptoms on waking. A partner may observe it before you do.

  • 03

Dental occlusion. Bite irregularities or poorly fitting dental work can place uneven load on the jaw muscles, contributing to overactivity over time.

  • 04

Habitual daytime clenching. Many people clench throughout the day during concentration or physical exertion, without noticing the sustained tension building in the jaw.

  • 05

Muscle hypertrophy. Repeated, forceful use of the masseter over years causes the muscle to enlarge, altering the lower face shape regardless of grinding severity.

  • 06

TMJ involvement. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction can both cause and result from chronic jaw overuse. Severe TMJ symptoms require dental or medical assessment first.

Frequently Asked

Questions we often hear

Is this a medical appointment? +
No. This is an aesthetics consultation with a Registered Nurse. We are not a GP, dentist or physiotherapy service. If your symptoms are severe, affecting your bite, or associated with TMJ disorder, we recommend seeking assessment from an appropriate health professional first. An aesthetics consultation can complement dental or medical care.
Do I need a referral? +
No referral is needed. You can book directly. If you have already seen a dentist or GP about your jaw, it is helpful to bring any relevant notes or records to your appointment, as it gives Nurse Lisa useful context for your assessment.
What if I am not sure whether a consultation is right for me? +
That is exactly what the consultation is for. You do not need to arrive with answers, only questions. Come and talk to Nurse Lisa and we will work through it together.
I already wear a night guard. Is a consultation still relevant for me? +
Yes. A night guard manages the consequences of grinding but does not address the muscle activity itself. Many patients already using dental appliances find it useful to discuss their concerns with Nurse Lisa as part of their broader care.
Do you see patients under 18? +
No. All aesthetics consultations at The Glow Co. Aesthetics are for patients aged 18 and over.
