One of the most common questions I get asked after an in-clinic treatment is: "When can I wear makeup again, and what can I use?" It's a completely valid question — and the answer matters more than most people realise. The wrong makeup applied too soon after a peel, skin needling, or any procedure that compromises the skin's barrier can cause irritation, breakouts, or interfere with your results. Here's why Guiya Minerals is the only makeup I recommend to my clients post-treatment.
Why regular makeup is a problem after treatment
After skin needling, a peel, or any aesthetic treatment that creates micro-channels or removes surface skin cells, your skin barrier is temporarily compromised. This means it's more permeable than usual — which is great for skincare actives, but a real concern when it comes to makeup. Conventional foundations contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, binding agents, and chemical filters that can penetrate those open channels and cause inflammation, congestion, or contact dermatitis. Even "sensitive skin" makeup from the pharmacy can cause reactions on freshly treated skin.
Why mineral makeup is different
Mineral makeup sits on top of the skin rather than penetrating it. The active ingredients — typically zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — are inert minerals that don't interact with the skin in the same way synthetic compounds do. They're non-comedogenic, anti-inflammatory, and in the case of zinc oxide, actually have mild antimicrobial properties that can support skin healing. This is why mineral makeup has been used in post-procedure settings for decades.
Why I specifically recommend Guiya Minerals
Not all mineral makeup is equal — and Guiya Minerals consistently stands out for its formulation quality and skin compatibility. Their Z-Cote Zinc BB Cream uses a zinc oxide formula that provides genuine SPF protection alongside buildable coverage. It's free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, and harsh preservatives. It's Australian-made. And importantly, it actually looks beautiful on skin — not chalky, not heavy, just a natural, skin-like finish.
I've tried a lot of mineral makeup options over the years, and Guiya is consistently the one I reach for and the one I recommend to clients coming in for treatments. The shade range — 10 options — is broad enough to suit most Australian skin tones, and I offer complimentary shade matching in clinic.
When can you wear Guiya Minerals after treatment?
For skin needling: I generally recommend waiting 24 hours before applying any makeup. After that, Guiya Minerals Z-Cote BB Cream is appropriate — just apply gently without rubbing or dragging the skin.
For a Murad skin peel, mineral makeup is typically fine 24 hours after a lighter, lower-strength treatment. For a stronger, higher-strength peel, I'd recommend waiting 48–72 hours depending on the degree of peeling and skin sensitivity.
For cosmetic aesthetic treatments (injectables): Mineral makeup is generally fine the same day, but I recommend waiting at least 4 hours and avoiding any pressure on the treated area.
The complete post-treatment makeup routine
My recommended post-treatment routine once makeup is appropriate to resume:
- Gentle non-foaming cleanser (no actives)
- Airyday Pretty in Zinc SPF50+ — mineral SPF that also provides gentle hydration
- Guiya Minerals Z-Cote BB Cream — applied with clean fingers, patted gently
- Optional: Guiya Golden Hour Illuminator for a subtle glow on top
That's genuinely all your skin needs in the days following treatment. Keep it simple, keep it mineral, and let your skin do its work.
The most important thing you can do for your skin after a treatment is protect it — with SPF and with makeup that works with your skin, not against it.
