Dermal Filler Aftercare: What to Expect and How to Support Your Results

Updated: Apr 12

Dermal Filler Aftercare:
If you've recently had dermal filler injections using hyaluronic acid-based products, proper aftercare is essential to minimise swelling, support healing, and help you feel comfortable as your results settle in.

Dermal fillers are commonly used to restore volume, enhance facial contours, and smooth static lines. While results can often be seen immediately, swelling and minor bruising are normal in the hours and days following treatment.

What to Expect After Dermal Filler Injections

It’s completely normal to experience the following post-treatment effects:

  • Swelling or puffiness at the injection sites (especially lips or under the eyes)

  • Bruising, which may take up to 7–10 days to resolve

  • Tenderness or sensitivity when touching the area

  • Small lumps or firmness, which usually soften as the filler integrates

Most effects subside within a few days. If you have concerns, your provider can assess your response at your review appointment.

Dermal Filler Aftercare Instructions

In the First 24 Hours:

  • Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated areas

  • Refrain from applying makeup directly over injection sites

  • Skip alcohol and blood-thinning medications (like aspirin or ibuprofen)

  • Avoid saunas, hot showers, and strenuous exercise

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours post-treatment

In the First 3 Days:

  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling (light pressure only, wrapped in a cloth)

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated to minimise puffiness

  • Avoid dental work or vaccinations, which may increase inflammation

  • Drink plenty of water to support hydration and healing

In the First 2 Weeks:

  • Avoid facial treatments such as laser, peels, or microneedling

  • Delay face-down massages or other pressure to the face

  • Wear SPF daily to protect the treated areas

  • Be patient — swelling may temporarily distort symmetry before settling

When to Contact the Clinic

While uncommon, please contact us immediately if you notice:

  • Severe or increasing pain

  • Skin that becomes pale, white, or dusky (blanching)

  • Areas that feel cold, firm, or look mottled

  • Prolonged or worsening swelling

  • Signs of infection (redness, heat, discharge, or fever)

These symptoms could indicate a vascular issue or delayed reaction and must be assessed promptly.

Follow-Up and Refinement

A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled around 2 weeks post-treatment. This allows your injector to assess how the filler has settled and determine whether any refinements are needed.

Filler integration can take time, and the goal is always natural, balanced enhancement — not overcorrection.
